Theory of electronic, magnetic and optical properties of semiconductor nanoscopic structures with the random spin-orbit field

The objective of this project is the investigation of a possibility to manipulate the electronic properties of mesoscopic structures by using inhomogeneous spin-orbit coupling fields. It is known that in semiconducting (or metallic) structures with certain symmetry of Hamiltonian describing the electronic structure, the homogeneous spin-orbit Rashba coupling is absent. However, theoretical investigations of the group in the University in Spain demonstrated that in reality the spatial fluctuations of this interaction can be very strong, which leads to essential changes of the electronic and transport properties of such structures. In our earlier studies, which we performed in cooperation with this Spanish group, we found that the spatial fluctuations of the Rashba coupling can induce a transverse spin current in the nonmagnetic structure similar to the spin Hall effect (SHE) in nonsymmetric structures with homogeneous Rashba spin-orbit interaction. Besides, it was found that there appear a possibility of some new effects, namely, nonlinear anomalous Hall effect and a negative magnetoresistance. Now we are working on these problems with the group of the University in Bilbao and we are preparing for publication some new results.

Our main scientific hypothesis in the project is based on the assumption that the correlations of spatially fluctuating spin-orbit coupling can be in principle quite well controlled. In the case of symmetric semiconductor quantum well, the corresponding correlator of the fluctuations of spin-orbit coupling field has been already determined, and its parameters have been related with the material parameters. We are performing similar investigations for the case of impurities with strong spin-orbit coupling (for example, Bi atoms) at the surface of semiconductor structure, graphene and topological insulator. Since the impurities can be ordered in some way in accordance with the self-organization principle we are anticipating absolutely different properties of such materials and mesoscopic structures.

To investigate the transport properties we are mostly using the methods of quantum field theory, namely, the functional integration, Green’s functions, Feynman diagrams, and also the Keldysh functions. For the description of spins in functional and path integration we are using the methods of coherent states. Besides the analytical calculations we are also performing numerical calculations. In this case we are using our self-made codes and the possibility to use the computer cluster in the Department of Physics of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan.

We believe that the development of the theory of disordered structures, in which the random field is related to the spin-orbit interaction, is the important problem of the solid state physics and semiconductor physics. The effects related to the spin-orbit field can be used in the spin electrons and in the energy convertor devices.
